What Is an R2 Certification?

The R2 certification requires that an organization must meet in order to handle electronic waste responsibly. These standards require certified companies to have a policy on managing used and end-of-life electronic equipment, components and materials based on strategies such as reuse, materials and energy recovery and/or disposal. In order for an electronic recycler to become R2 certified they must fulfill all the requirements and keep their practices up to the standards of the R2 certification.

Some of the requirements covered in the R2 Practices include the proper management of environmental sustainability and obtaining a safe system of work for their employees. They have to do this all through strong environmental, health and safety (EHS) management. This a way to make sure these electronic recyclers are working as hard as they can to make sure they are protecting the environment and the people working on safely recycle these electronics. R2 recyclers also have to include the proper selection and -management of downstream vendors. R2 Certified recyclers also have to use generally-accepted data destruction practices, safe storage practices, a functioning security program and demonstration of financial responsibility.

The R2 Certification focuses on the well being of the environment and people but also it is a way for companies to ensure that their data is being destroyed. If data is not sufficiently destroyed then that puts companies in the position for potential hacking and data loss. By using an R2 certified recycler you are guarding your companies data and ensuring the protection of your customers and employees.
